AIB Fellow - José de la Torre
José de la Torre is Dean of the Alvah H. Chapman Graduate School of Business at Florida International University in Miami, where he also holds the James Batten Eminent Scholar Chair in Management. He was Professor of International Business Strategy at UCLA's Anderson School of Management from 1986 to 2002, and Founding Director of UCLA's Center for International Business Education and Research from 1989 until 2000. Formerly, he was Professor of International Business and Chairman of the Strategy and Environment Area at INSEAD (the European Institute of Business Administration) in Fontainebleau, France, a member of the faculty at the Institute of International Business at Georgia State University, and a Research Associate at the Harvard Business School. He has held visiting appointments at a number of graduate business schools in Latin America, including the Central American Institute of Business Administration (INCAE), the Universidad del Valle, Colombia, and the Universidad Adolfo Ibanez, Chile. He served as Visiting Professor at the Institute of International Business of the Stockholm School of Economics in 1992, and at the Theseus Institute in Sophia Antipolis, France, in 1997-2001.
Professor de la Torre is the author of over 50 books and articles and more than 30 case studies in the field of international business and strategy. He has written on the management of multinational firms, the relationship between corporate strategy and government policy, and on foreign investment in developing countries. His books include The Activities of IT-Multinationals in the European Community, EEC, Brussels (with Yves Doz and Landis Gabel, 1985); Clothing-Industry Adjustments in Developed Countries, Macmillan, London (1986); and Managing the Global Corporation, McGraw-Hill, New York (with Yves Doz and Timothy Devinney, 2000). Recent articles deal with the structure and efficiency of multi-plant operations in multinational companies, the management of international corporate alliances and the operations of multinational and local companies in Latin America. His publications have appeared in the Journal of International Business Studies, the Academy of Management Review, Management Science, Organization Science, the California Management Review, Management Research, European Management Review and other leading professional journals.
Dr. de la Torre was a Visiting Scholar at the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1980-81. He has consulted with many international companies such as After Image, Eastman Chemicals, Fluor Corporation, Gallo Vineyards, Hughes Aircraft, John Hancock, Johnson & Johnson, Kraft Foods, Mead Imaging, Motorola, Northern Telecom, Rockwell International, and Sonoco Products (USA); Akzo-Nobel and Heineken (Netherlands); the Bemberg Group and Quilmes (Argentina); Telecom Italia and Montedison (Italy); British Petroleum, British Aerospace and GKN (UK); and Mitsubishi Electric (Japan). He is Co-Chairman of Perseus Consulting, a global business consultancy, and was a faculty associate of Gemini Consulting for over ten years. In 1992, then Governor Pete Wilson appointed him to the Select Panel on Project California. He has also consulted in the past with government agencies in Europe and Latin America, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the OECD, and the United Nations. At present he serves on the boards of MphasiS, a global software company based in Mumbai, India, and on the board of Quantum Corp., an organization providing health care services to various participants in the health care industry. In both instances he chairs the Compensation Committee. He was a member of the Board of Directors of PROEZA, S.A., a large diversified corporation headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico, in 1998-2005 and chaired the Strategy Committee of the board.
Professor de la Torre received his doctorate from the Harvard Business School in 1970, following degrees in aerospace engineering and business administration from the Pennsylvania State University. He is a member of various professional societies, served as President of the Academy of International Business in 1999-2000, was President of the European International Business Association in 1980-82, and serves on the editorial board of several academic journals in the field. He was a member of the Board of Advisors of the Los Angeles Times for 1994-96, and served on the Executive Committee of CLADEA (the Council of Latin American Schools of Management) from 2002 until 2007. He currently serves on the International Advisory Board of EDHEC business school in France and ICSTE Business School in Lisbon, Portugal, and on the Academic Committee of U. Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Dr. de la Torre has lived and worked at various times in Europe, Asia and Latin America. He is married to Marta Araoz de la Torre, they have two grown children and three grandchildren, and reside in Miami.
