Chapter Report 2003
AIB USA Southwest Chapter
The 2002 Academy of International Business U.S. Southwest Chapter Conference was held in St. Louis, Missouri from March 5-9 in conjunction with the 2002 Federation of Business Disciplines (FBD, formerly SWFAD) Conference. FBD is presently composed of 13 regional professional associations that focus on the improvement of research and education activities of schools and colleges of business administration.
Not least because of the tragic events in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, overall participation at the FBD conference decreased by almost 30 percent (from 1,100 to 782). The Academy of International Business U.S. Southwest Chapter, however, was the only association among the 13 groups that was able to increase the number of its conference participants (by over 10 percent).
The elected chapter officers for 2002-2003 are as follows:
Chapter Chair:
Jane LeMaster, University of Texas-Pan American
President:
M. Kabir Hassan, University of New Orleans
Vice President Programs:
Wolfgang Hinck, Louisiana State University in Shreveport
Vice President Publicity & Membership:
Rock-Antoine Mehanna, Wartburg College
Secretary & Treasurer:
Melissa N. Castillo, University of Texas-Pan American
The AIB-SW Chapter Organizing Committee planned a very timely and informative meeting. The following are the highlights of the 2002 conference:
- A total of 20 sessions were organized and 62 papers were presented.
- Two Special Panel Sessions were organized on the topic of "Globalization Issues and International Business Trends" (part I & II). Selected IB scholars and speakers for the special sessions included:
Lyn S. Amine, St. Louis University; Allan Bird, University of Missouri-St. Louis; Terry Clark, Southern Illinois University; Lorraine A. Eden, Texas A&M University; Julian E. Gaspar, Texas A&M University; Maasaki Kotabe, Temple University; Ike Mathur, Washington University; David A. Ricks, University of Missouri-St. Louis.
- The Program Chair was Wolfgang Hinck (Louisiana State University in Shreveport). The conference proceedings (2002 Southwest Review of International Business Research) were edited by Melissa N. Castillo, University of Texas-Pan American, and Zafar U. Ahmed, Fort Hays State University.
- All program committee members, conference track chairs, and best paper authors were recognized for their contributions. The 2002 McGraw-Hill/Irwin Distinguished Paper Award in International Business was awarded to Halil Kiymaz (University of Houston-Clear Lake) and Osman Kilic (Quinnipiac College).
