AIB US SW Chapter

2001 Chapter Activity Report


The 2001 Academy of International Business U.S. Southwest Chapter Conference was held in New Orleans, Louisianna (March 1-3) in conjunction with the 2001 Southwestern Federation of Administrative Discipline's (SWFAD) 28th Annual Conference. SWFAD is a collection of 13 business conference/disciplines and was attended by 1400 participants from the U.S. and overseas. The elected chapter officers for 2001-2002 are as follows:

Vice President Programs:
Kamlesh Mehta, St. Mary's University

Vice President Publicity & Membership:
Kabir Hassan, University of New Orleans

Secretary & Treasurer:
Duane Burdorf, C.H. Robinson, Inc., Laredo

The AIB-SW Chapter Organizing Committee planned a very timely and informative meeting. The following are the highlights of the 2001 conference:

  1. A total of 16 sessions were organized and 42 papers were presented.
  2. Over 70 presenters and participants registered for the meeting.
  3. Two Special Panel Sessions were organized on the topic of "International Business and E-Commerce Issues" (part I & II). Selected IB scholars and speakers for the special sessions included:
    Lyn Amine, St. Louis University, Sarah Beaton, U.S. Department of Education, Washington D.C., Tamer Cavusgil, Michigan State University, Terry Clark, Southern Illinois University, Pervez Ghauri, Groningen University & Michigan State University, Subhash Jain, University of Connecticut, and P. Rajan Varadarajan, Texas A&M University, College Station.
  4. The conference proceedings (2001 Southwest Review of IB Research) was edited by Wolfgang Hinck, University of Texas, Pan American.
  5. All the program committee members, the conference track chairs, and the best paper authors were recognized for their contributions as well. The McGraw-Hill/Irwin Distinguished Paper Award in international business was won by George Puia (Saginaw valley State University) and Douglas Petersen (Indiana State University). The title of their papers was "Unintended Consequences of Cultural Change: A Longitudinal Study of Cross Cultural Management"
