AIB USA Northeast Region
2000 Annual Meeting Report

Prepared by: Hormoz Movassaghi, Program Chair

The 2000 annual meeting of the Academy of International Business - Northeast Region was hosted by the School of Business at Ithaca College (IC) in Ithaca, New York and held on IC's campus on June 9 and 10.

The publicity for this even started in October '99 through the AIB-NE web site which at the time was managed by Dr. Lloyd Russow - Philadelphia University, then president of the AIB-NE region. This was followed by two "Call for Papers" which were mailed out in November and December '99 through Dr. Russow's Office. The last "Call for Paper" was sent to the AIB-NE membership by the School of Business at Ithaca College in February 2000, usin glabels provided by the AIB Executive Secretary's Office in Hawaii. The annual meeting was further promoted through the new AIB-NE web site at the College of New Jersey as well as being posted several times to the AIB Listserve by Dr. Rajib Sanyal, the current AIB-NE region's president. Finally, an "invitation to attend" the meeting, along with a preliminary Conference Schedule and other pertinent information was mailed out to the AIB-NE members in April 2000 by the School of Busines at IC.

A total of 48 papers were submitted for presentation. All papers were "blind reviewed" by at least two peers, and in some cases three, besides the Program Chair. The 25 reviewers, representing colleagues from universities in the U.S. and abroad, recommended all papers for presentation and a select group for publication in the Conference Proceedings either as a full text or one page abstract. Please refer to the Conference Proceeding for the list of the reviewers and their organizational affiliations.

The Conference started with a cocktail reception on Thursday, June 8 evening. The presentation of papers/panel discussions took place all day on Friday June 9 and half a day on Saturday, June 10. On both days, there were 4 sessions in the mornings: two concurrent sessions in each time block, 8:45 - 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to noon. Similarly, there were four sessions on Friday afternoon, broken into two concurrent sessions from 2:15 to 3:45 and 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. On both days, the luncheon meetings featured prominent keynote speakers from area companies. The Conference ended on Saturday after the luncheon meeting at 2:00 p.m. Please see the attached "Conference Schedule" for Program details, including the titles of the papers presented, their authors and their institutional affiliations. Also attached is an "Events Summary" describing various details of the Conference and offices involved in organizing this event.

In total 56 people participated in the Conference, wtih 50 colleagues presenting papers, serving as discussion panel members, session chairs, or keynote speakers, together with the School of Business dean, associate dean, and four students who helped out with various organizational aspects. There were four late cancellations/no shows. The majority of the participants, as expected, came from colleges and universities in the northeast U.S. region but there were several colleagues from Asia and United Kingdom also. Please see the attached list for the names and addresses of all participants. The luncheon keynote speakers for Friday, June 9 included Mr. Anthony D. Hensel, Vice President - FInance, BorgeWarner Morse TEC, Inc. (a Fortune 500 global corporation) accompanied by Mr. Cal Organ, Vice-President - Human Resources, BorgWarner Morse TEC, Inc. On Saturday, June 10 the speaker was was Mr. W. Michael Driscoll, an IC - Scohol of Business alum, and a business consultant with extensive global experience in such well known companies as Honeywell, AT&T, and Smith Corona.

From a financial standpoint, as testified by the attached summary, the Conference broke even. In fact, there was a small loss as the mailing costs and the telephone/fax charges which had to be allocated to the Conference account were borne partly by the Philadelphia University (for the first two Call for Papers) and mostly the School of Business at Ithaca College.

The Conference, as evidenced by attendance at various sessions, quality of the presentations, ensuing exchanges, and anecdotal remarks of those present at the General Meeting or luncheon/dinner gatherings, was very successful.

In concluding, it was an honor and privilege for me to serve as Program Chair for this year's meeting of the Academy of International Business - Northeast Region. I wish to express my sincere thanks to Dr. Rajib Sanyal for his guidance throughout this process, and Ms. Melissa Wieczorek, Assistant Director of the Institute for Global Management - Temple University for her sharing the materials and experiences in organizing the 1999 AIB-NE meeting. I'll be happy to pass along my experience and/or assist future hosts of the AIB-NE meetings in any way I can.
