The Annual Report on Japan Chapter

Membership

While the exact data of our current membership is not available because we are not administrate them directly, the approximate figure would be 120-130. This has remained unchanged for the last few years. I think that a new recruiting campaign to increase membership up to 150 is necessary toward the next year.

Chapter Conference

Our 1997 Chapter Conference was held in the Big Island of Hawaii in June in the form of joint conference of 4 chapters located in Asia-Pacific area. Our chapter received 11 submission of papers, a few of which were submitted from overseas such as U.S., Australia, and Netherlands. Out of 11, 9 were finally presented in Hawaii. Participants from Japan were about 20. The conference was very successful due to the effective preparation and excellent arrangement particularly made by the AIB administration, Professor Jim Wills and Ms. Laurel King. Japan Chapter hopes that this attempt to integrate 4 chapters will continue in order to promote the activities in Asia-Pacific area. The Southeast Asia Chapter has already expressed the intention to host the 2nd conference in 1998. We are willing to cooperate with other 3 chapters to make it more successful.

Linkage with JAIBS

As explained in the last year's report, JAIBS (Japan Academy of International Business Studies), the first independent academic organization which researches into IB, has been established since 1994. JAIBS now has over 500 memberships which involves almost all the memberships of AIB Japan Chapter. I myself also serves as one of its directors. JAIBS has been steadily developing and is now recognized as the center of IB studies in Japan. Because the organizational stability of JAIBS is realized after a few years' initial period, it might be timely and effective for us to start to explore the possible linkage between AIB Japan and JAIBS.
