Report on the Activities of the Western European Chapter

1. EIBA's Annual Conference

1.1. The main activity of the European International Business Academy (EIBA) was the 24th Annual Conference in Jerusalem, December 13-15, 1998. The conference was chaired by Eugene Jaffe, President of EIBA' of Bar Ilan University, Israel. The general theme of the Conference was "International Business Strategies and Middle East Regional Co-operation". The Conference organisers and reviewers accepted 114 papers. For the first time in EIBA's history the Conference proceedings were made available to the participants on CD-Rom.

1.2. The 25th Annual Conference of EIBA will be held in Manchester, England, December 12-14, 1999. Professor Fred Burton, University of Manchester as Chairman. The theme of the upcoming conference is "International Business and the Global Services Economy". The Conference is hosted by UMIST, The Manchester School of Management.

1.3. Future EIBA-Conferences that are scheduled are: Maastricht (Chairman: John Hagedoorn University of Limburg) in December 2000; Paris (Chairman: Alain Chevalier) in December 2001 and Athens (Chairman Marina Papanastassiou) in December 2002.

2. EIBA's Doctoral Activities:

2.1. In Jerusalem the 12th Doctoral Tutorial for the Best Thesis Proposal Award was held in collaboration with EIASM. Ten students were selected to defend their thesis proposal before the Faculty of the Tutorial. The members of the Faculty were: John Dunning, Orjan Sölvell, Danny Van Den Bulcke (chairman), Bernard Yeung and Bernard Wolf. The Award for the Best Thesis Proposal was granted to Elvira Haezendonck (University of Antwerp) and Jeffrey Johnson (University of Strathclyde).

2.2. The 12th Doctoral Tutorial will be held in conjunction with EIBA's Annual meeting in Manchester on December 12, 1999. Out of 24 applicants 11 students from 10 different countries have been invited to defend their proposal.

2.3. Gunnar Hedlund Award for Best Thesis in International Business: The Institute of International Business of the Stockholm School of Economics together with EIBA has established a Prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis in international business to a thesis that shows originality and interdisciplinarity. The Prize was awarded for the first time in Jerusalem. The selection Committee was composed of John Dunning, Don Lessard, Orjan Solvell and Danny Van Den Bulcke. Out of the 4 doctoral theses that were shortlisted out of more than 20 that had been sent in, Tony Frost (MIT) won the Prize.

2.4. EDEN Doctoral Seminar on International Management: PRIME After the first EDEN Seminar on International Management was organised by EIASM in Brussels from June 15 to 19, 1988, the students set up PRIME (Ph.D. Researchers in International Management in Europe) and issued their first Newsletter Prime Times in March 1999. The next newsletter only appeared on its website http://www.ruca.ua.ac.be/prime. About 60 students have become member of PRIME.

3. Obituary Hans Günther Meissner died in June 1999. He held the marketing chair at the University of Dortmund and was one of the founding fathers of EIBA. He was a former president of EIBA and organised two annual conferences, the last one in Berlin in 1988.
